An Eastern European supermarket has opened in Doncaster town centre, bringing 15 full-time jobs to the town.

La Cocos Supermarket is located in Danum House, Sepulchre Gate, a unit that was previously occupied by Peacocks. Most of the products will be from Romania, with a smaller section of English foods. It also plans to open a bakery on site, selling fresh bread, pastries and cakes. There will also be a café.

Owned by Simply Food Direct, it is its second supermarket to open in the UK - the first being in Scunthorpe - and Adam Zar, Operations Manager, said it aims to open 10 by 2025. It also has two warehouses in Romford, Essex.

It has signed a 10-year lease for the 11,993 sq ft store with LCP, which owns and manages units 1-4 on Sepulchre Gate.

Adam said it had invested about £450,000 in the Doncaster supermarket, which is its flagship store in the UK.

The brand is well known in Romania, which launched in 2014 and has three large supermarkets, with a turnover of more than 110 million euro.

"We were looking for a suitable premises in Doncaster for our second shop and Danum House is ideally located, in the centre of town," he said. "We're looking forward to opening and bringing a taste of Europe to South Yorkshire. Many of the brands will be familiar to the Romanian and Polish communities, but there are also English products, too, so we are catering to as many shoppers as possible."

Simon Eatough, associate director of LCP, said: "This is a significant letting in the centre of Donacaster and we're pleased to welcome Simply Food Direct, which is bringing Supermarket La Cocos, an exciting new brand, to the town."

Richard Honick, of LCP's in-house legal team, completed the transaction.
